These days every penny counts and I was amazed by how many sandwich baggies I was using when making lunch for myself, the hubby and the 4 kiddos. I did the math! One lunch was taking about 5 bags per person, this comes out to 30 bags per day for my family of 6. Yikes. Not only nasty for the environment, but them bags ain't cheap! A quick trip to the fabric store and about an hour of my time and I have reusable baggies that are washable (cute!), waterproof (cute!), and environmentally friendly. Did I mention how cute these are?
Materials Needed:
- 1/2 yard of waterproof diaper fabric
(I found this on a bolt, sold by the yard, but here’s a link to prepackaged fabric http://www.joann.com/babyville-waterproof-diaper-fabric-mod-girl-flowers-dots-3-pkg/zprd_11109493a/) - stick on velcro circles
- Foodsaver
- Cut the fabric into rectangles that are a little more than twice the size you want your baggies to be.
- Once they are all cut get your Foodsaver ready and fold the fabric over (allowing for a flap to close)
- Line your fabric up on the heating element getting as close to the edge of the fabric as possible (but fully covering the element with fabric). Do this to both sides.
- Once both sides of the bag are fused together apply the sticky velcro circles. I found 2 or 3 worked, but depending on the size of your bags you may need more or less. I found that I liked to apply the fuzzy side then stick the pokey side to it, then I would fold over the fabric, which would then stick to the adhesive. This made sure the velcro was properly aligned.
- TADA!
